  1. "Hinckley", in Burrage, Henry Sweetser; Albert Roscoe Stubbs; and George Thomas Little. Genealogical and family history of the state of Maine. (New York, New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, c1909), p. 1503.

"Samuel (3), third son of Samuel (2) and Sarah (Pope) Hinckley, was born September 24, 1684, in Barnstable, and died in Brunswick, Maine, where he settled after January, 1720. He resided in Harwich, Massachusetts, until 1715, in which year he removed to Truro, Massachusetts, going thence to Maine. He was married in April, 1710, in Harwich, Massachusetts, to Mary, daughter of Edmond and granddaughter of Major John Freeman of that town, where she was born. Children : Seth, Shubael, Samuel, Mary, Edmond. Reliance, Aaron, Mehitable, Experience, Isaac and Gideon."

  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 A marriage date of April 1710 as reported in the cited source would be after two of their children were born, so is probably incorrect. The alternate date of 1703 is probably based on Source:Genealogical notes of Barnstable families : being a reprint of the Amos Otis papers originally published in the Barnstable Patriot, p. 40, says that "Reliance, [born] Nov. 21, 1714 (this date is doubtful). She is recorded as the eldest child, date probably 1704." As explained on Person:Reliance Hinckley (1), Otis is probably wrong, and so the 1703 date is left with no credibility. Since Samuel Hinckley was born 1684, the marriage probably occurred no earlier than 1705. Since their first child, Seth, was born in 1707, it might be about 1706.
