THE THIRD GENERATION A11 SAMUEL BLACK b 1727 Londonderry Ireland d 28 Dec 1782 Albemarle Co VA s/o John Black m JANE PORTER d 1814. Samuel was a Second Lieutenant in Capt. McCleary's Company in the Revolutionary War. Both he and his father John served in the militia, repelling the attacks of Indians. In 1772 Samuel purchased a tract of 600 acres along the Allegheny Divide in the eastern boundary of the 7500 acres called Draper (Montgomery Co VA Deed Book A, p. 39). However, there is no evidence that he ever lived on this land, for his residence was in Augusta County were he left his will to be probated in 1783. By this will he left the Montgomery County property equally to his sons, John and William Black. The will noted that William Black was already living on the lands (Chalkley, Chronicles, III, 164). A117 WILLIAM BLACK b 1766 Montgomery Co VA d 22 Dec 1851 Clark Co OH s/o Samuel Black & Jane Porter m 28 Mar 1793 JANE MCBETH b c1766 d 23 Jan 1843 Clark Co OH d/o Andrew McBeth & Sarah Clinton.

William Black was a life-long farmer and "self-made" man. While in Virginia, he was a Circuit Court Judge for 14 years until he moved from the state. He possessed a unusually retentive memory; he could recite with great accuracy entire sermons, speeches, etc. which he had heard.

It was William Black who petitioned the General Assembly of Virginia, requesting a town be established. The petition was addressed to "The Speakers and Members of the General Assembly of Virginia" in the following words:

The petition of William Black humbly sheweth that your petitioner having a piece of ground in a healthy climate , a fertile neighborhood with excellent springs thereon, and agreeably and well situated for a small town, did at the request of a number of his friends and neighbours lay off 38 acres three quarters of an acre and 25 poles of the same, into lots and streets and disposed of a number o the said lots, the purchaser of which hath built and are now building several houses thereon. And your petitioner has been advised to solicit your Honable body to establish by law a town at said place. Your petitioner therefore prays that your Honble House will pass an act vesting the said 38 acres, three quarters of an acre and twenty-five poles of land lying in Montgomery County, in Trustees and establish a town thereon as the same has been already laid off into lots and streets and grant to the holders of the same such privileges as are given to Citizens of other towns in this Commonwealth not incorporated. And your petitioner as in duty bound will pray.

The town was incorporated under the Act of the General Assembly in 1798 and named Blacksburg. The Trustees were John Black, William Black, George Rutledge, James P. Preston, Edward Rutledge, John Preston, and John Henderson (Montgomery Co Deed Bk C, 163). In 1845 Blacksburg had a population of 250, one Presbyterian Church and one Methodist Church. William gave land for a school and a cemetery. While living in Virginia he owned slaves, as was the custom then, but, when his family left for Ohio, they freed all the slaves.

William Black and his wife Jane sold their remaining lands to George Surface in 1814, excluding from the deed the 38 acres of town land and one acre adjoining the town on the west near the "smith shop" sold to Harman Sifford in 1810 (Montgomery Co Deed Bk E, pp 28. 463).

In 1814 William and his family moved to Clark Co OH where he purchased a tract of land from the government. William and Jane left each of their sons some 400 acres of land when they died.
