Samuel and Mary Jane's marriage was registered in 1886, but they were living as husband and wife as early as 1881[2], and probably by 1880 when their first known child was born. The parish records of the baptisms of Elizabeth in 1880, Samuel in 1881 and Mary in 1884 refer to them as Samuel & Mary Jane Beer, with no mention of their marital status.
