The couple lived on several farms in north central Iowa, beginning with a farm south of Independence for several years before moving to a farm a few miles west of Randalia when their youngest was in grade school, then moving to a farm about 3 miles south of that farm when all the children had left home, finally retiring to a home in Shell Rock, Iowa. It was while living there that Ralph became ill and passed away in the Waverly, IA hospital. A few years later, Emma moved in with her youngest son, Wayne until she required skilled nursing care, then was moved to a nursing home in Oelwein, IA where she lived out her final days.
