On 30 November 1849 Pieter and Jaapje Luijendijk arrived at the port of New York. They sailed on the ship Triskina, which had departed from Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The reason listed for leaving The Netherlands was improvement of existence.

Although no one is certain of the change in spelling, one can infer that the ij was changed to y. Luyendyk is the spelling on Pieter and his son Cornelis’ death certificate.

In the dutch language 'ij' is pronounced like the english 'y'. If you write ij in cursive, and leave off the dots, it looks like a y.
