Paul Gray Richey was born 27 September 1901 the son of Elijah Truitt Richey and Sarah Zorado Gray in Como, Hopkins County, Texas. He grew up on the farm of his parents where they grew hay, corn, cotton and other crops as well as a few cows.

Paul married the former Lois Brownfield and two children were born:

• Mattie Ruth Richey, born 9 November 1923, Hopkins County, Texas

• Tressie Richey,

After his marriage to Lois ended in divorce, he enlisted in the Army on March 30, 1928. He was 28 years old and was a Radio Mechanic. He served 1 year and 4 months and was honorably discharged 26 July 1929.

After returning home from the army, Paul met Mrs. Irene Campbell Tuttle, and they married in Shreveport, Louisiana on 2 April 1931. Irene was a registered nurse by profession and they moved to Coffeeville, Kansas for awhile where she worked in a hospital there.
