Paul Gray Richey was born 27 September 1901 the son of Elijah Truitt Richey and Sarah Zorada Gray in Como, Hopkins County, Texas. He grew up on the farm of his parents where they grew hay, corn, cotton and other crops as well as raised a few cows.

He married Lois Brownfield 13 January 1922 and two children were born to them:

• Mattie Ruth Richey, born 9 November 1923, Hopkins County, Texas

• Living Richey,

The marriage ended in divorce shortly after the second child's birth.

He enlisted in the Army on March 30, 1928 when he was 28 years old, and his occupation was a Radio Mechanic. He served 1 year and 4 months and was honorably discharged on 26 July 1929.
