    pages 39-40.

'Sir John and Olive Wright had eight children; the order and date of birth is not fully known; ...
The children of Sir John and Olive and probable dates of their birth were:
    Eldest John Wright, b. 1510.
    Katherine Wright, b. 1513.
    Robert Wright, b. 1516.
    Alice Wright, b. 1519, ...
    Middle John Wright, b. 1522.
    Young John Wright, b. 1524.
    Elizabeth Wright, b. 1526, ...'

On page 39, the author describes the reasoning for placing the birth of Middle John Wright in 1522 (which includes estimating that his marriage took place in 1546, although it was actually in 1541, according to a parish record transcribed and published in 1899). The other birth years appear to be based on the assumptions that Middle John was born in 1522 and that his father was born in 1488 (being "of full age" in 1509).

NOTE: The eighth child was a fourth daughter (see page 37), who presumably died without issue before 1560, when her mother wrote her will.

Note that the christening dates (or in the case of Middle John, the birth date) given in the Ancestral File agree exactly with the years speculated by this author. This, and the fact that the Ancestral File identifies the christening place as Kelvedon (an error for Kelvedon Hatch), although Sir John Wright was "from South Weald" when he bought Kelvedon Manor in 1538 and "of Wealdside" in his son's 1541 marriage record, lead to the conclusion that the christening dates were manufactured some time after the book was written.

Knowing that Middle John married in 1541, and assuming he was about 25 at the time of marriage (Wright estimated age 24, since Middle John married a widow), and also assuming a gap of 2-3 years between children, revised estimates for the birth years of the children are:
    Eldest John Wright, b. 1511
    Robert Wright, b. 1513
    Middle John Wright, b. 1516
    Katherine Wright, b. 1518
    Young John Wright, b. 1521
    Alice Wright, b. 1523
    Elizabeth Wright, b. 1526
    unnamed daughter, b. 1528

These are, of course, simply estimates that fit the data. There is no particular reason for placing the unnamed daughter at the end, other than to avoid speculation on where else she might have fit.

  3. Marriage year estimated based on estimated birth years of their children, and on the fact that John Wright was known to be of full age in 1509.
  4.   IGI gives a marriage date of 17 Mar 1509 at Dagenhams, which is assumed to refer to Dagenhams Manor, which the Wright family did not own until some time after 1555 (History of the County of Essex, 2:432). The marriage date and place are assumed to be inventions (like the christening dates of the children).
