Disputed Information

There is considerable dispute among researchers as to when John McClung and Rebecca Stuart were married. According to several publications, John McClung married first to Janet Thompson. One of those publications, "Defending the Wilderness", by David J. Emmick, as follows:

One caveat in the record above is that based upon other records, Thomas McClung listed as a son of John McClung's SECOND marriage was possibly a product of his first marriage with Janet Thompson, but this needs additional research.

In addition, a key record proving John McClung's first marriage to Janet Thompson is listed in the following Chalkley's references:

  • Page 127.--21st October, 1754. Robert Mean's will - To John McClung. Money in hands of Edward Thomson and Thomas Thomson. To the said Thomas McClung, the note of James Nilly, which is in hands of Thos. Black; wife a keeping, to said John. Teste: James Gay, Jenot Warrick. Proved, 21st November, 1755, by the witnesses; administration granted Thomas Thompson, nephew and heir-at-law of Robert Means, who qualified with sureties Hugh Hicklin and George Wilson.
  • Vol. 1 - NOVEMBER, 21, 1755. - (507) Robert Means's will proved. Admr. moved for by Thos. Thompson, his nephew and heir-at-law, and also by John McClung, who married Jennet, niece of decd - given to Thomas.

Robert Means was indeed the uncle of Janet "Jennet" Thompson and the records above re-inforce and help to prove a prior marriage of John McClung to Jennet Thompson.

Disputed Record

Recently, a supposed marriage bond of John McClung to Rebecca Stuart in 1726 has surfaced to "prove" that there was no prior marriage to Jennet Thompson, but the origin/location of this record has not been shared by the submitter of the marriage bond on Ancestry.com, casting doubt upon its authenticity. This marriage bond obviously is in direct conflict with the records listed above.

John McClung was born in Ireland and died in 1706 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He was married first to Janet Thompson who died in 1743. Their children were John, James, William, Joseph and Captain Samuel. John married Rebecca Stuart after Janet's death. Their children were Thomas, Janett, Edward, Charles and Mary. The sons all settled in Greenbrier except John Jr. Daughters Nancy and Janet also stayed in Rockbridge County.

    - this date is obviously in error, more likely a year of birth. John McClung died in 1787 in Greenbrier County, Virginia [later West Virginia].
