Advistory on John Lowry, Sr.

NOTE: There has been confusion regarding the family of John Lowry, Sr. and his son, John Lowry. Some researchers have combined them into one person, based upon records in early Virginia. John Lowry, Sr. died abt. 1759 and John Lowry, Jr. died shortly thereafter in 1762, which has caused much of the confusion. Please read the information regarding both John Lowry's before making any additions to these families. Thank you.

Additional information (including sources) would be appreciated on this family with any updates.

Records and Notes for John Lowry, Sr.

Information from Bill Reisor (e-mail: bjreisor@airmail.net)

The following information about John Lowry I was obtained from the Will E. Parham Papers, McClung Collection, Lawson McGhee Library (Will E. Parham Papers, Blount County Public Library, Maryville, TN 37801).

John Lowry I - probably from Ireland dies 1759. A survey was made for him in 1738 in Orange Co., VA later that part that was made into Augusta Co., VA. It was one of the earliest surveys made. It reads as follows:

1738 - 9 ber ye 3 - 1738 Survey for John Lowry beginning ( ) William Allen etc. 1752 John Lowry is living on the North branch of the James River in Augusta Co. (now Rockbridge Co., VA). He has tract 2. - 350 acres. His son, John II leaves a Will made Nov. 26, 1761, dies 1762. Wife Elizabeth, children: William, Rebecca; John and Robert are to be taught trades. Daus Jennet and Elizabeth to be paid by young brothers David and James Lowry. To David and James; infants, plantation testator lives on. Elizabeth, John Moore and Robert Lowry act as executors. Robert Lowry is brother of John II.

Elizabeth (Lowry) who married John II could be a daughter of Andrew Moore and Elizabeth Baxter. They were early settlers in Rockbridge Co. from the north of Ireland. Andrew Moore dies 1749. It's very probably that James Lowry (son of John II was also in S.W. VA before settling in N. Corner of TN. - as he was a witness on the will of Samuel Duff in 1790 (From Summers S.W. VA).

Early VA Marriage records show a John Lowry married Elizabeth Seaton in St. Paul's, Stafford Co., VA 23Apr1726.
