NOTE: There has been confusion regarding the family of John Lowry, Sr. and his son, John Lowry. Some researchers have combined them into one person, based upon records in early Virginia. John Lowry, Sr. died abt. 1759 and John Lowry, Jr. died shortly thereafter in 1761, which has caused much of the confusion. Please read the information regarding both John Lowry's before making any additions to these families. Thank you.

Additional information (including sources) would be appreciated on this family with any updates.

Note: The father of this John Lowry was John Lowry that died in 1759, probably in Augusta County, Virginia. There are some sites claiming different parentage (including the Familysearch.org site), but they are apparently incorrect according to research compiled by this researcher.

From Bill Reisor, (e-mail: bjreisor@airmail.net):

John and Elizabeth Lowry were in Augusta County, VA as early as 1742 (the first date of John's several land purchases) and probably were of Scotch-Irish descent, as were most of the settlers of that county. Records show that John was a member of the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church in 1753, along with the Houston, Montgomery, Steele and Keys families, with whom some of his children would later inter-marry.

Some of the information about John Lowry II's children was taken from "Family Scrapbook" Vol. 2 p. 223 notes by Lulu Purdy(Mrs. F.L.) Gilson, Emporia, Kans.

Children of JOHN LOWRY and ELIZABETH ??? are: i. WILLIAM4 LOWRY, SR., b. Abt. 1747, Virginia3; d. 08 May 1820, Monroe County, Tennessee3; m. (1) ISABEL ???, Bef. 17973; m. (2) ANN MCCLELLAN, 17 Mar 1797, Near Morganton, Blount County, Tennessee4; b. Abt. 1770; d. Abt. 1848.

Notes for WILLIAM LOWRY, SR.: From Bill Reisor:

William Lowry Sr. was married to Ann McClellan who was previously married to John Wallace. John was killed by the Indians in 1793, at Rome, Georgia. Ann had at least 5 children by John Wallace. Ann married William Lowry in Blount Co., Tennessee. According to a court case in Monroe County, TN, William, Sr. died in 1820 in Monroe County, TN near the mouth of Bat Creek before his wife, Ann, and their sons, William M. and David, moved to Island Creek in Monroe County, TN. in 1820 or 1821.
