- William Hays settled onto the lands of the North Fork of the Holston River sometime before 1770. This area is in present-day Smyth County, Virginia near the town of Marion. William commissioned a land survey for 224 acres which was completed on 28 February 1775. William's land was purchased immediately next to land owned by Capt. John Hays, Jr. John's land was surveyed on 4 March 1774. Another close neighbor of William was a Rebecca Hays who married William Richardson whose nickname was "Buckeye Billy.
These Hays people are most likely siblings and their father is likely the John Hays (1720-1778) who was named in the Last Will & Testament of the emigrant John Hays of Hays Creek (abt 1674 - 1750) who lived in Augusta County Virginia (present-day Rockbridge Cnty). This LW&T named John and his two children: John and Rebecca.
I have absolute proof of my paternal family lineage back to William Hays. I have additional Y-DNA test results that connect me to William's neighbor Capt. John Hays and his grandfather the emigrant John Hays as named above. The combination of the DNA results along with the proximity of John, Rebecca and William imply a family connection in my opinion.
