CHENEY, John (?1600-1666) & Martha _____; ?SMITHE (-3 Mar 1631?); in Eng, by 1627, ca 1625; Roxbury/Newbury
[Investigating the sources cited for this entry shows that only one, Source:Davis, Walter Goodwin. Ancestry of Phoebe Tilton, 1775-1847, Wife of Capt. Abel Lunt of Newburyport, Massachusetts, attempts to provide a surname for the wife of John Cheney. On p. 147, it says "was, in all probability, that John Cheney who married Martha Smithe in Lawford, co Essex, England, on March 3, 1631 ... if they were in fact the Lawford Cheneys, John must have had an earlier wife." The remaining sources, including Pillsbury Anc., Newell Anc., Newbury Hist., Cheney, Chute, Felt Anc., Stowell (1912), Sv, leave her maiden name unspecified, and do no argue for or against any particular name. Source:Anderson, Robert Charles. Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, p. 2:63, says of Davis identification of John as the Lawford John Cheney, "...not impossible, but poses some chronological problems which cannot be resolved without further investigation..."]
