This source indicates that John married: 1st Phyllis, 2nd Joan and 3rd Mathen Taylor. The first marriage to Phyllis seems to be based on his mother's will (dated 24 Oct 1587), which mentions her daughter-in-law Phyllis Brownson. Other interpretations are possible, of course, such as that Phyllis was married to another unnamed (presumably deceased) son, or that Phyllis was her step-daughter (since the term 'daughter-in-law' was also used for 'step-daughter').
Since the parish registers for Earl's Colne are incomplete between 1588 and 1609, it is entirely possible that a first wife Phyllis died and John remarried during this time period.
