THE SECOND GENERATION A1 JOHN BLACK( (Information from Kegley, Mary B., EARLY ADVENTURERS ON THE WQESTERN WATERS, VOL II (Orange, VA Green Publishers, Inc.)1982, pp 194, 197, 198) b c1705 Ireland d 9 Aug 1769 s/o James Black I of Ireland. John Black with two brothers and their families emigrated from Ireland to America in about 1738. They landed on the Delaware River about where Wilmington now stands. They settled on the forks of the Brandywine Creek, in what was known as Penns County or Pennsylvania, remaining there for a few years. One brother afterwards settled in New Jersey. His other brother remained in PA. , but after a few years a portion of his family moved to Albemarle Co VA and from there some moved on to Kentucky near where Lexington now stands. John Black and his family moved from the forks of the Brandywine Creek and settled in Albermarle Co VA. John & Catherine had five sons and four daughters. Two sons went west into Kentucky and Tennessee; one of these sons was never heard of again and it was supposed that he was killed by Indians. The other brother who went west settled on the Tennessee River near the town of Knoxville. His descendants were highly respected citizens in the Knoxville area. File No. 927.--Stuart vs. Black. Robert Stuart complains that Samuel and James Black claim his land. Robert is son of Thomas Stuart, who received conveyance from Beverley, 1st March, 1749. Beverley conveyed to John Black, ancestor of defendants, 30th May, 1749. William Black deposes, 16th November, 1801, at house of John Black, in Montgomery County: Remembers the line (?) trees, when he was a small boy, 20 years ago. Deponent is son to Samuel Black. 537 John Black, aged 45 years, deposes, 16th November, 1801, at house of John Black in Montgomery County: Is son to Samuel Black. Deponent and Robert Stuart attended I. Cunningham's school. Receipt, viz: "July ye 15th, 1742. Received of John Black, ye quit rent of 738 acres of land in Manner Beverley, due for four years last past, viz: A.D., 1738; A.D., 1739; A.D., 1740; A.D., 1741. per JOHN HART, D. S. O. C." Samuel McCutchen identifies Hart's handwriting above. Samuel and James Black (son of Samuel Black) answer: Their land is part of 738 acres surveyed for John Preston, 19th and 23d April, 1738, and sold to Samuel and James's grandfather, John Black, by Beverley, 31st May, 1749. Cornelius Adair deposes on the premises, 19th December, 1801: About 30 years ago he was shown the stumps, &c., by father of the complainant, Robert, who told him they were the corner of Patton's land (now Swisher's). Joseph Coalter deposes, same time and place: Some time ago he was informed by a certain Mary Donnally, then an old woman, now deceased, who had lived in Patton's family, that said Patton had at first made a large survey, perhaps about 1,700 acres. William Black deposes, same time and place: That a considerable time ago his brother, Samuel Black, showed him the corner. Deponent is now about 62 years old, and has known the corner since he can remember, and it was a corner on the Manor line and his father's tract. Mr. Stuart died, 1788. John Black deposes, on premises, 19th December, 1801: That in 1755 he helped repair the fence of his uncle, John Black, grandfather to defendant. Two years after Braddock's defeat he was taken on the muster roll, at the age of 16.

In the name of God amen I John Ramsey of Augusta County Colony of Virginia being sick of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory praise be therfore given to almighty God do make and ordain this my present last will and testament in manner of form following that is to say first and principally I commend my soul into the hands of almighty God hoping through the merits of death of passion of my saviour JesusChrist to have full and free pardon of forgiveness of all my sins and to inherit everlasting life and my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter named and as touching the disposition of all such temporal estate as it hath pleased almighty God to bestow upon me I give and dispose thereof as followeth -first I will that my debts of funeral charges shall be paid and discharged - Item I give unto Andrew Ramsey my son one little survey of land betwixt John Patricks line of John Blacks in the south side of the river and also the money I lent said Andrew to pay Robert Estham of two cows and two calves and one feather bed and furniture to him and his forever - Item I give unto my son George Ramsey three hundred pounds the one half cash and one half in n... and stock to be valued by two men and my property of land in Cantucky and three head of horses which is called his own to him and his heirs for ever. I give unto my son John Ramsey one french crown I give unto my son Alexander Ramsey one french crown Item I give unto my son William Ramsey one french crown. Item I give unto my grand son John Ramsey one french crown Item I give unto my grand son Alexander Ramsey one french crown Item I give unto my grand daughter Mary Ramsey twelve hundred pounds paper money which I lent to the Office if she dies before she becomes of age the same money to be paid to my grand son John Steele. Item I give and bequeath to my loving wife Mary Ramsey the half of the land which I now possess and the half of the n.... and the half of the cattle and horses and the half of the houshold furniture of the mantion house hill her discease and likewise the half of the rest of the stock Item I give and bequeath unto my son Daniel Ramsey the whole remains of my estate and the whole of my land which I now possess at his mothers discease to him and his heirs for ever and my loving Mary and Daniel Ramsey to pay each alike share of the debts and the lega? be paid out of the whole head.. Item My loving wife Mary Ramsey Andrew Ramsey Andrew Steele to be full and sole executors of this my last will and testament and I do hereby revoke disannul and make void all former wills of testaments by me hertofore made in witness wherof I the said John Ramsey to this my last will and testament do by my hand and seal in the year of our lord god this fifteenth day of February one thousand seven hundred and eighty three John Ramsey John Patrick John Black Samuel Black At a court held for Augusta County April 15th 1783 the last will and testament of John Ramsey deced was proved by the oaths of John Patrick and Samuel Black two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the executors therin named who made oath according to law certificate is granted them for obtaining a probat therof in due form they having complyed with the law
Capt. in the Augusta Co. Militia, a founding member of Tinkling Spring Church and owned tracts of land in Beverly Manor/Borden's Grant. Left a will in Augusta, VA in 1783 naming seven sons and grandchildren. Sons were William, James, John, Alexander, Andrew, George & Daniel. See note under son. Mary was born about 1730. She married John RAMSEY.

THE THIRD GENERATION A11 SAMUEL BLACK b 1727 Londonderry Ireland d 28 Dec 1782 Albemarle Co VA s/o John Black m JANE PORTER d 1814. Samuel was a Second Lieutenant in Capt. McCleary's Company in the Revolutionary War. Both he and his father John served in the militia, repelling the attacks of Indians. In 1772 Samuel purchased a tract of 600 acres along the Allegheny Divide in the eastern boundary of the 7500 acres called Draper (Montgomery Co VA Deed Book A, p. 39). However, there is no evidence that he ever lived on this land, for his residence was in Augusta County were he left his will to be probated in 1783. By this will he left the Montgomery County property equally to his sons, John and William Black. The will noted that William Black was already living on the lands (Chalkley, Chronicles, III, 164).
