    m2) [as her second husband] 4.2.1785 Margaretha X (b. 1748)

Note: Johann Rempel originally received a homestead at Rosenthal which he gave to Bernhard Krahn (later of Burwald). Johann received his Einlage homestead upon the death of Johann Wiens (see above [Einlage I.40]). This was later given to another Johann Rempel who moved to Niederchortitza.'

Two adult Johann Rempel's immigrated to Chortitza Colony around 1795 to 1796 - one born about 1752 and one born about 1772. Neither is listed in the 1795 census. The former lived in Einlage (1797, 1801 and 1808 censuses) and the latter in Rosenthal (1801 census) and then Burwalde (1803, 1806 and 1808 censuses).

Between 1795 and 1802, in Rosenthal, Dietrich Klassen died and his farm was granted to Johann Rempel, and Johann Rempel's farm was given to Bernhard Krahn (Unruh, p. 252). There does not appear to be any reason to believe that these transactions involved two different Johann Rempel's. It is certain that the receiver of Dietrich Klassen's farm was the Johann Rempel who moved to Burwalde (Rempel, p. 3, which incorrectly states that Dietrich Klassen originally settled in Burwalde). Therefore, unless Schapansky was privy to additional sources, he may have been incorrect in stating that the Johann Rempel born about 1752 received a homestead in Rosenthal.

Schapansky also seems to be incorrect in introducing another Johann Rempel who received the Johann Wiens homestead and then moved to Nieder Chortitza. The Johann Rempel born about 1752 does not appear in the 1806 census of Einlage, where his recently married son (household of 1 male and 1 female) is the only Johann Rempel listed. It would appear that the Johann Rempel born about 1752 moved to Nieder Chortitza in 1803, and then back to live with his son Johann in Einlage by 1808.

    pages 13-14.

1797 census: 'Johann Rempel ([name also given in Cyrillic]), whose family consists of 2 males and 3 females, has 1 house, 3 horses, 9 head of cattle, 8 pigs. Settled in Einlage, Chortitza. (W1-14.10.1797)'

1806 census: 'Isbrandt Rempel ([name also given in Cyrillic]) arrived in Russia in 1798 and was an original settler in Einlage, Chortitza. ... In 1806 the owner of the farm is Johann Rempel ([name also given in Cyrillic]), whose family consists of 1 male and 1 female. (W3 - 24.7.1806)'

The Johann Rempel in 1806 is the son of the Johann Rempel in the 1797 census.

    The Homestead List 1802
Directory of landlords in Chortitza Colony, as they were first established in the colony and by what circumstance the names of the first landlord were changed, 1802 ...
Johann Wiensz died, the homestead was granted to Johann Rempel.

While this is listed under Neuenburg, it appears to apply to Einlage, which does not have a separate list in this section of Unruh. There are at least two other entries (Neuenburg #193 and #210) that apply to Einlage, so it is assumed that the list for Einlage got combined with the list for Neuenburg.

    page 38.

'Johann Wiens ([name also given in Cyrillic]), arrived in Russia in 1789 and moved to Nieder Chortitza. ... In 1806 the owner of the farm is Johann Rempel ([name also given in Cyrillic]), whose family consists of 2 males and 1 female. (W3 - 24.7.1806)'

It appears that somewhere in the transition between the original Russian documents and the English published book, the meaning of the information gathered in the 1806 census was misinterpreted. It is true that Johann Rempel was not an original homesteader in Chortitza Colony, having received a farm that previously belonged to Johann Wiens - but this occurred in Einlage by 1802 (Unruh, p. 250, which incorrectly includes Einlage records with Neuenburg records), not in Nieder Chortitza, where Johann Rempel moved in 1803 (Unruh, p. 214).
