Child List
The children of James Walker 103 are variously given as:
- Henry
- James
- Joseph
- Robert
- Samuel
The "History of Johnson County, Iowa" gives vanity biographies of James, Joseph, and Samuel, who are identified as early (1837) settlers in Johnson County, and identifies them as brothers from Portage County, Ohio. A vanity biography of Henry in this same work, also identifies him as coming from Portage, but does not identify him as a brother of the above.
It is possible that Henry is a brother of Samuel, James and Joseph, but it seems odd that he would not have been mentioned with them as one of the early settlers. Since Henry's bio states that he came from the same county in Ohio as the other three, it may be that he is a cousin, and not a brother.
Henry's biography gives his parents as James Walker and Sarah Burnett. Perhaps there were two James Walkers in Portege County, one married to a Sarah Burnett, and the other to a Mary Barnett/Burnett/Benett, though the 1830 census lists only one.
The History of Johnson County, also identifies a Robert Walker as an early settler, but does not identify him as related to Henry, James, Joseph or Samuel. Rather it gives his POB as New York State. It seems unlikely that this particular Robert is kinsman to Henry, James, Joseph and Samuel.
The 1830 census for Johnson County lists
- James Walker Johnson, Iowa Territory 2 2 2
- Robert Walker Johnson, Iowa Territory 5 2 7 7
- Samuel Walker Johnson, Iowa Territory 3 2 5 5
There appears to be no mention of either Henry or Joseph.
The 1840 census, however, identifies two different Robert Walkers
one, Robert B, was born in Ohio in 1800. His wife's name was Caroline
- Robert B Walker 40
- Caroline Walker 44
- Louisa Walker 5
- Alexander Mccorcle 21
Since he also comes from Ohio, and lives next door to Joseph Walker and Wife Jane, this Robert B could be a brother of James, Joseph and Samuel, though he's not identified as such in any of the entries in History of Johnson County. Perhaps, like Henry, he's a kinsman but not brother.
the Second Robert Walker was born in 1802 what looks like "NC". Close inspection says this is really NY. His wife's name was Ellen.
Robert Walker 48
Ellen Walker 49
David Walker 16
Alonza Walker 8
James Walker 28
This matches well with his vanity bio in History of Johnson County, Iowa:
Robert Walker, Esq., was born in Schenectady, N. Y., Oct. 4, 1802; was married, Feb. 19, 1S23, to Miss Ellen McWade. Six children were given to the wedded pair. They came to Iowa in 1838, and settled in Pleasant Valley, where, after a number of years, his wife died. In 1S53 he moved to Iowa City, where he was married to Mrs. Avis Mygatt, who still lives to mourn his loss. They moved to Clear Creek township in 1850. He died Oct. 28, 1879. In religious belief he was an ardent Universalist, and sustained his belief by a life of irreproachable morality.
