James Davis vs. Andrew McClure and James McClure.--Bond dated 25th August, 1743. Andrew was from Bucks County. James McClure from Augusta. James Davis of Augusta. Writ dated 25th January, 1744.

From "The Tinkling Spring: Headwater of Freedom", pg. 212:

It was under the influence of Mr. Waddell that the Tinkling Spring Church sent her first son to the ministry. The James McClure family were charter members of the chiurch and pioneers in education, having the earliest building of record in Old Augusta County. The second son of James and Agnes McClure was Andrew, born in Ireland in 1720, who settled adjacent to his father between Tinkling Spring and Woods GAp and married, about 1742, Eleanor Wright, presumably of the same family of William Wright, the Tinkling Spring officer. To them was born about 1755 a seventh and last child whom they named Andrew. He, with the entire family worshiped at Tinkling Spring. The parents saw that he had an education, he being among the few students of Mr. Graham at Augusta Academy who secured the A.B. degree. He did surveying after leaving school. He served during the Revolution at Fort Randolph (Point Pleasant) as a 1st. Lieutenant.

At the meeting of Hanover Presbytery, assembled at Augusta Stone Church, in November 1781, he was received as a candidate for the ministry in the Presbyterian Church. On the 29th of August 1782, he married Rebecca Allen, daughter of James Allen, Sr., and Mary, his wife, of the Augusta Stone Church. He waslicensed to preach October 25, 1782, and on May 20, 1784, he was ordained by presbytery at a meeting in the Bethel Church.

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 17, Ed. 1, Tree #1661, Date of Import: Jan 18, 1999]

Of James McClure's early life we know nothing. He first appears in Hanover Township, PA on the Hanover Assessment for the King's Use in 1759.

James was Constable in Hanover in 1765 and signed the Oath of Allegiance to Pennsylvania on August 19, 1777.

He served during the Revolutionary War as a Private in Capt. James Rogers' Company, 11th Battalion, Pennsylvania Militia, Col Timothy Green, commanding; "destined for the Camp in the Jerseys, 6th June 1776". What happened to this company is unknown but many of the same men including James were again enrolled in Capt. William Brown's Company and again "destined for the Camp in the Jerseys, August ye 31st, 1776".

James was assessed foor 200 acres of land in Hanover Township in 1781.

At the time of his death in 1805 at the age of 72 James had a plantation of about 230 acres. This property was adjacent to the of son Francis McClure, his son-in-law James Cathcart and a William Beard with whom he served in the Revolution.

James, his sons Francis, John and James, Jr., his daughter Martha and her husband Andrew Wilson, and his daughter Mary McClure Snodgrass are all buried in the Old Hanover Presbyterian Church Graveyard, Dauphin County, PA.
