Notes

The James McAllister in Augusta and Rockbridge Co., Virginia, WAS NOT the James McCallister who died in Bath Co., Virginia in 1801. Even though they both had wives named Mary, they were completely different men and their descendants are NOT Y-DNA matches. Unfortunately, earlier researchers mixed the two men together, and attributed records for James of Rockbridge to James of Bath Co. and that mistaken information has been posted repeatedly online as if it is accurate, when it is not.

James McAllister of Rockbridge Co. was the owner of land that ultimately ended up in Rockbridge Co. That land included his initial 160 acre grant in the Borden Patent (1764); a 22 September 1766 grant of 100 acres on Teas/Kerr's Creek; and an August 3, 1771, patent for 22 acres on a draft and spurs of the House Mountain (on waters of Kerr's Creek).

James McCallister of Bath Co. only owned land on Jacksons River, in what ultimately became Alleghany Co., Virginia. He never owned land in the part of Augusta which became Rockbridge.

I have identified 5 children for James and Mary McAllister of Rockbridge. There may have been others.

A. John McAllister, b. 1752 --1759 probably in Augusta (now Rockbridge) Co., Virginia, d. after 1778.

B. Joseph McAllister (J18) b. abt. 1754 in probably in Augusta (now Rockbridge) Co., Virginia, d. 22 July 1833 in Pulaski Co, Kentucky. He married Agnes “Nancy” Gilmore on 10 Oct 1781 in Rockbridge Co, Virginia. He was on records in Rockbridge Co., Virginia, starting in 1779. Joseph’s children were listed in his Revolutionary War Pension File S31241: James (deceased before 1834), Robert, John, George, Adam, Harvey, and Martha McAllister James. (deceased before 1834)

C. Benjamin McAllister b. abt 1761 in Augusta (now Rockbridge) Co., Virginia, d. 21 Mar 1830, in Rockbridge Co., Virginia. He married Hannah McDonald on 29 Jun 1789 in Rockbridge Co., Virginia. He was on records in Rockbridge Co., Virginia, starting in 1782.

D. George McAllister, b. abt. 1762 in Augusta (now Rockbridge) Co., Virginia, said to have died abt. December 1789 in Lincoln County, Kentucky, but he and brother-in-law Samuel Wood were listed as an adjacent landowners on a 1793 Rockbridge Co., Virginia, land grant. He married Sarah by 1785. He was on records in Rockbridge Co., Virginia, starting 1782 through 1793. He gave bond for Jane McAllister’s marriage to Samuel Wood in 1784. He might have been the father of Nathaniel McAllister, who is mistakenly listed as Joseph’s son.

E. Jane McAllister b. abt. 1766 in Augusta (now Rockbridge) Co., Virginia. She married Samuel Wood on 7 Feb 1784 in Rockbridge Co., with George McAllister as bondsman. Samuel Wood and George McCallister were listed as an adjacent land owners on a 1793 Rockbridge Co., Virginia, land grant.
