In an 1865 letter, DC Miller writes to John Cowan identifying him as "Cousin". John is believed to be the son of James Cowan and Elizabeth of Fulton County, PA. He does not appear in the above census record, but that's presumably because he's an older son, and out on his own, though still living in the same area. YDNA results establish one of John's descendants as a Cowan's Gap Cowan, who were centered in Fulton County and nearby areas. The fact that DC Miller identifies John as a cousin suggests that the maiden name of John's mother (presumed to be Elizabeth who married James Cowan) may have been "Miller".

However, if Elizabeth was indeed born in 1834, as suggested by the 1860 census record above, then its difficult to see how John could be her son. Clearly an adult in 1865, he would have to have been born before c1845, and Elizabeth would have been too young to have been married. The census record DOB for Elizabeth may be in error. If she were born closer to when James was born, (1824) then John could plausibly be her son.
