James Haverfield Ashton's parents were Rev. Charles F. Ashton, b. 6/2/1823, Heighington England, d. 1903 and Mary Haverfield, b. 11/6/1823 in Richland Co. Ohio and d. 1899. Mary Haverfield married Charles Ashton on June 22, 1845. He was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. They moved to Layette OH and then to IA. He became a member of the Des Moines IA conference. After his retirement from the ministry (35 years) they bought the Guthrian and ran it. They had eleven children including James Haverfield Ashton.
