Source:Crane, Ellery Bicknell. Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County Massachusetts, p. 320, hints at the confusion surrounding the various Jacob Chamblerains when he says, "He [Jacob Chamberlain, son of William Chamberlain"] should not be confused with Jacob Chamberlain, who married Experience, and lived in Newton and vicinity, for both belonged to a generation earlier; nor with Jacob Chamberlain, of Boston and Newton, whose wife's name was also Susanna. The latter Jacob may have been a son of Edmund..." It turns out Crane was himself quite confused. The Jacob he called the son of William, husband of Susannah, was actually the grandson of William, the son of the Jacob of this page. And the Jacob who was son of Edmund had a wife named Sarah and lived in Roxbury, not Newton (and his son, Jacob, also married a woman named Sarah and lived in Roxbury).

Source:Cutter, William Richard. Historic Homes and Places and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Middlesex County, Massachusetts (published a year after Crane), p. 1:250, says, "Jackson himself, author of the history of Newton, altered the town records by inserting the name of Susanna as the wife of this Jacob [son of William] in the copy of the birth record of Jason and Ebenezer [his sons]. Jacob Chamberlain (2) [son of William] married Experience ---.

Source:Chamberlain, George Walter. William Chamberlain of Billerica, Mass., and His Descendants, p. 110-111, notes that the gravestone of Experience reads "Here Lyes ye Body of Mrs Experience Dyke wife to Mr Jonathan Dyke who Died May 24 1749 Aged 83 years 2 months & 2 D's. She was formerly wife to Mr Jacob Chamberlain who Died April 11 1712 By Whome she had 5 Sons All Living at her Death". This, combined with a memorandum in Jacob's probate, dated 16 May 1715, naming his children as "Jacob, John, William, Jason, Ebenezer" clearly shows which children belong in this family.
