As Herman and Lena both appear to be from Hungary, and to have immigrated around the same time, it is not known whether they met and married in Hungary, or met and married in Chicago. Lena and Herman lived in Chicago probably from 1890, and certainly by 1892, when their first son David was born. They had a second son Bernard (known as Benjamin or Bennie) in 1894, and a daughter Lena (known as Sadie) in 1896. Herman was a fruit/produce seller, and the family lived in various apartments west of Wicker Park (a couple blocks below W. North Ave, and either side of N. Western Ave). Lena died of a heart problem in late 1900, leaving Herman with the three children ages 8, 6, and 4. The 1910 Census indicates that about 1908 Herman remarried a young widow named Rose, who had no children of her own. In the 1920 census, "Harry" (54) and Rose (43) are living at 2630 W. Crystal St., with son Benjamin, age 25.
