Interview with Lois DECKER, daughter of Herman and Pearl NEWCOMER, March 2002:

Herman and Pearl moved to Arkansas soon after they were married so Herman could work in the lumbar camps. My oldest sister, Eleanor, was born in Arkansas. Mother got homesick for family and for Williamsport so they moved back to Pennsylvania.

My father, Herman, was a carpenter and pattern maker for tools and machinery. He had his own pattern shop in Williamsport. Dad was a good provider and he always worked, even during the depression. He always had a job.

My mother, Pearl, was a very sweet, loving mother. She always had a garden and raised chickens. We also always raised 1-2 hogs every year. We made our own sauerkraut from our cabbage, and sausage, cracklings, and lard from the hogs. My mother was good at stretching food to be able to feed everyone. She kept our family together.

We moved often as a family in Lycoming County. We usually were within 10 miles of Williamsport. I first went to school in the city of Williamsport for 3 - 4 years. Then I went to a country school for 4 years where all eight grades were in one room. That was quite an adjustment. We had electricity in Williamsport, but when we moved to the country we did not. We had kerosene lamps and a wood stove for cooking.

I remember the depression. We struggled to get along. Nobody had anything.

My brother Ken was in the California ship yards during WWII, and had joined the Air Force after the war. He retired in Alaska. He moved to Williamsport after 1981, then to Florida for the last year and a half of his life.

Leroy married early in life, had 3 boys, then traveled without them. He came to live near me in Florida for the last few years of his life. Ken moved near us, too.

Eleanor married, had a couple of kids and stayed in Willamsport.

Genevive married and had 4 children and also stayed in Williamsport.

Larue married and left behind a daughter when he was killed in Italy during WWII.

Mariam married and had 3 boys. --kath newc 11:00, 24 January 2011 (EST)
