To check:Horatio Griffiths (1)Born after mother was 50

On the 1911 census Henry and Mary indicated they had been married 47 years, had 6 children born alive but only 1 still living, 5 having predeceased them. There is some evidence from the 1871 census to support the idea that a formal marriage did not occur in 1864 (Ellen Catherine and Annie M. are surnamed Llewellyn and listed as "dau-in-law") or that the enumerator for that census muddied the family record.

Abney Park cemetery records seem to confirm their statement from the 1911 census that 5 children had predeceased them by that time. However, confusion remains regarding Mary Ann Llewellyn Griffiths, listed on the 1881 census and buried at Abney Park in 1885 and Annie M. Llewellyn/Griffiths, listed on the 1871 census but still alive and living with her parents, aged 22, on the 1891 census. Assuming Annie and Mary Ann are not one and the same, the couple would appear to have had 7 children, if they had been together since 1864. Alternatives might include that Henry Llewellyn Griffiths, Henry's first child and the first one buried in the family plot in 1869, aged 3, was not Mary's son. Or, Horatio, who is not buried with the other children in Abney Park, and who was born in 1888 when Mary would have been 51, ten years after the next youngest sibling, is not Mary's son. Horatio's whereabouts in 1911 need to be determined.

The 1901 census sees Horatio and Llewellyn H. still living at home. Llewellyn was 22 and working at the Post Office while Horatio was 12. This census provides specific birthplaces, indicating that Henry Griffiths had been born in Llandilo, Mary in St. Bride's Major, Horatio in Stockwell, London, and Llewellyn H. in Kennington.

By 1911, the surviving child was Llewellyn Henry Griffiths who registered his mother's death on 27 Nov 1912. He had started his own family, with his wife Agnes, the year before.

Henry Griffiths wrote a letter to his sister-in-law, Catherine Llewellyn Tattle, in Toronto to inform her of Mary's passing, but Catherine died before the letter was received.
