Henry and Charlotte were born in Hesse, GermanyS1. According to the 1920 census record of daughter Charlotte, they immigrated to the United States in 1866 S2. They probably married before Charlotte was born in 1857, so they must have been married in Germany. Henry is seven years older than Charlotte. If they married in 1856, he was 29 and she was 22.

Their first two children, Charlotte and Christian were born in Germany. Charlotte was 9 and Christian was a year old when the family crossed the ocean. They added two more sons after arriving in the US, Henry three years later in 1869 and youngest son John in 1873.

In 1897 the family became caught up in scandal when daughter Charlotte's brother-in-law became known as the Sausage King MurdererS3. The trial was a turn of the 20th century sensation, cited in all the major newspapers. Son-in-law Arnold Luetgert, Charlottes' husband and brother of the convicted murderer committed suicide in grisly public fashion. Henry was called on to identify the remains.
