J.F. ROSE of Ogema, Sask., who is spending winter in Guthrie Center recalls building of livery "Old Hotel" in last week's Guthrian. Mr. ROSE is nephew of Sam REED who owned the first "tavern" in Guthrie Center & who built the barn in question. Sixty yrs ago Sam REED traded some land in Guernsey co Ohio, for the tavern, but when he & his fam and the fam of his bro-in-law E.A.ROSE arriv here they found just the bare frame work of bld, no windows and unfinished. It was then the 20th of Oct but the two fam managed to make the bldg habitable, and liv there that winter. The lumber used was native timber cut out at Bear Grove & sawed at Crook's saw mill. This mill afterwards moved to Hamlin Grove in Audubon co, where for yrs a saw & grist mill was operated. Mr. ROSE says that wheat was hauled as far away as Van Meter. After the old barn had stood on its first location for some years, it was moved onto the site of present town hall, and was there until "Father Ashton" of the Guthrian moved it onto his farm out on Brushy. [Sam Reed was Hannah Reed & Amanda Reed's father]
