"Joan was not the daughter of Tobias MAKIN, whose daughter Joan MAKIN married Richard STONE as her only husband. The 1610 will of Tobias MAKIN names Edmund SHERMAN and his son Richard SHERMAN. It is possible that Grace MAKIN, daughter of Tobias MAKIN, married an Edmund SHERMAN, but he has not been specifically identified."

Douglas Richardson wrote the article titled; "Was Tobias Makin the Ancestor of the New England Sherman’s?". This article concludes that the Joan Makin discussed is not Joan Makin Sherman the wife of Edward Sherman of New England.

MARRIAGE: By 1599 Grace Makin, daughter of Tobias Makin [Michael J. Wood, private communication]. She was living on 14 June 1643 (when her husband's half-brother Samuel Sherman made a bequest to "my loving sister Sherman Edmond's widow" [PCC 14 Rivers; Waters 1178-79]).

  5. Lots of confusion has existed about the mother of this large family. While sources have discredited Joan Makin, there wasn't any apparent support for the other alternatives proposed, either (Judith Angier or Grace McKim). While we may be skeptical, the Edmund Sherman sketch in Vol. VI of The Great Migration has identified Grace Makin [probably identical to Grace McKim] as the wife of Edmund. That will have to suffice until and unless new information comes to light. This conclusion would require, however, Grace to have been born somewhat earlier than 1585 date estimated by Hyde and Richardson in the TAG 61 article.
