Lois and Clayton met at a ballgame in Arkwright - her brothers and Clayton wer on opposite teams, and she was the scorekeeper. They were married in 1930 and bought the farm from Hugh and Julia, Clayt's parents. Lois was teaching school at Burnham Hollow. They milked cows and raised chickens. They peddled eggs and cleaned, dressed chickens in Dunkirk for many years, taking over the route of Hugh and Julia, that included small grocery stores, taverns, and individual families.

They saw many changes during their married years: from work horses to tractors, outhouses to indoor plumbing, kerosene lamps to electricily, and wood cook stove to electric stove. Lois was a hard worker and enjoyed working. Clayton was often sick and to weak to work, so Lois and the boys often did the farm work. Clayton had scarlet fever as a child and was left with a weak heart. Lois preferred work to handcrafts, gardening or cooking.

The boys walked to their one room school house about a half mile from their farm. High School was in South Dayton, which they took the bus to.
