Christopher Branch, (1) the earliest American ancestor of record of Thomas Jefferson, was born probably about 1598 in England, the only son of Lionel Branch (1566-1605) and his wife, Valentia Sparke, who were married 8 July 1596 at St. Martin, Ludgate, in the city of London. Christopher married at St. Peter's, Westcheap, London, by virtue of a marriage license from the Bishop of London, on 2 Sept 1619. His bride was Mary Addy, daughter of Francis Addy of Darton, Yorkshire. In March 1619/20 they embarked in the London Merchant for Virginia. Christopher Branch is recorded among those "living" at "The College Land" in present Henrico County, 1623/4 (2). In the muster of 1624/5, he, his wife and 9 month-old son Thomas(2) are listed there. In 1632 he returned briefly to England and unsuccessfully brought suit to recover the Bull Inn at Abingdon, Oxfordshire, which had been owned by his uncle, Thomas Branch (1557-1603.)

As "Christopher Branch, Planter, of Arrowhattocks in Henrico County, "he was granted a lease, 20 Oct. 1634, for 21 years on 100 acres lying" east upon the Maine River." (3)

The Branches were descendants of Christopher Branch, of Kingsland, Henrico County, Virginia. Burgess 1639. ("Virginia Gleanings in England", The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. XIII, July, 1905, No. 1, page 58.

Christopher became the father of Thomas Branch in Henrico County, Virginia, about 1623. Christopher and his wife Mary came to Virginia in March 1620 on the ship London Merchant of 300 tons burden, dispatched from Trelburyhope by the Virginia Company with 200 colonists aboard. They settled first at Arrowhattocks on the north side of the James River in Henrico County, moving later to Kingsmead on the south side of the river in what is now known as Chesterfield County. He was a planter. His will was read February 20, 1681 in Henrico County, Virginia.
