From the Glen Innes Guardian, June 27, 1879.
A terrific storm of wind and rain set in on Monday continuing till late on Tuesday night.
|
The wind was about the most violent we remember having witnessed, while the rain poured down with uninterrupted fury during the time stated. Several small houses were unroofed, fences, sign-boards, &c, have been blown down, while the bush in the neighbour hood, is literally strewn with felled timber. On Tuesday the various water-courses had overflowed their banks, and the traffic was partially suspended. The telegraph lines between Glen Innes and Armidale and Glen Innes and Vegetable Creek were interrupted and communication suspended for a time. The weather again cleared on Wednesday. We learn that Mr. Carl Tronier’s residence, a substantial brick cottage, is reduced to a wreck. On Tuesday night, when the storm was at its highest point of violence, Mrs. Tronier was seized with fear, and rushed from her room. The warning seemed to have been providential, for scarcely had she gained the outer room than a huge tree was hurled upon the roof of the bed-room, smashing it to atoms. Serious damage is also reported from outside, such as the destruction of fences, barns, &c.
