Sally, Melvina's sister, lived with Charlie and Mel. Sally and Mel enjoyed swinging on the front porch, chatting with passers by and gossiping. Every Friday night Sally and Mel would go to the movies where they would receive a prize each time -- they had to every time to get the whole set.

The closest store was about three houses down, "Tooties Store" (sp?) and was simply the first floor of a house. The coal mine would pay the workers in company script. The workers were required to pay for items using coal mine script and pay coal mine prices.

Behind their house they had an old out house that had a plank with four holes and a Sear's catalog for wiping.

After the children moved out they would try to get together for Sunday dinner. Melvina was a good cook and served roast beef, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables, cakes, pies and always coleslaw. The coleslaw was made with cream, vinegar, sugar and salt.
