Explanation

Descendancy diagrams for various groupings of Porters are being prepared to aid in investigating family relationships. For the most part, these diagrams focus on the male descendants, since the objective is to establish the relationships among persons bearing the Porter surname. A common system is used within these diagrams to give an approximate estimate of the confidence with which relationships have been established. To simplify the presentation as much as possible, the key for these relationships is given here, and not repeated on each diagram.
