Purpose
This page is intended to collect Cowan land records for Sevier and Blount COuntiesTN, as well as occasional records for other nearby counties. Where possible, individuals have been identified by WeRelate article, and by Cowan YDNA group. Note: Hugh Cowan is commonly listed as a chain carrier in these areas. Usually, the chain carriers were recruited from adjacent project owners and their sons, probably to also act as a witness in the case of disputes. In Hugh's case, he appears in survey records as a chain carrier across a number of counties, and probably was formally employed, perhaps as an apprentice surveyor. It seems likely that he is one of the sons of David Cowan, e.g., Person:Hugh Cowan (10). Currently, only a single entry is shown for him, where he served as a witness in a particular land transaction
