There are literally millions of surnames, or "family names", in the world. Even the division into 26 "initial" subcategories will produce very long lists eventually (although it needs manual work at present, so will not be lightning-fast!).

We have some automated procedures related to this. Anyone working on a surname page or category that is not already in a "higher" category is invited to use this structure. For example, add [[category:Wxyz surname]] to a page that deals mostly with the Wxyz surname, and add [[category:Surnames "W"]] to the "Category:Wxyz surname" page.

As this project grows, we may find better ways to organise for ease of finding. Anyone with ideas about it is welcome to use the talk page.
