[edit] SignificanceAspenvale Cemetery is on the register of Historic Places. It is the family cemetery, and burial place of Brigadier General William Campbell. During the Revolution Campbell led the Overmountain Men were led by General Campbell at the Battle of King's Mountain (October, 1780). King's Mountain is widely recognized as the turning point of the Revolution, and ultimately led to the surrender of Cornwallis one year later at Yorktown Virginia. Afterwards, Campbell was active in the final Yorktown Campaign, but took sick and died a few months before Cornwallis' surrender. His body was returned for burial at his family home in Seven Mile Ford, Va. General Campbell's grave was marked by an engraved slab to the immediate left of the three spire markers in the above photo. The original marble slab has been replaced, but the original engraving was copied verbatim to the new marker.
