Overview

The Albemarle Group is one of several groups of Woods who settled in Old Augusta, and nearby Albemarle County. This group is nominally headed by Michael Woods. They came to Albemarle County from the Paxtang area of Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg, following the Great Road south into the Valley of Virginia. They crossed the Blue Ridge at Woods Gap (now Jarman's Gap). Michael Woods secured a number of land warrants in these areas in 1737, taking up property on Lickinghole Creek, and Ivy Creek, and purchased substantial additional lands on the Meechum River.

Archibald, William and John can be identified as the sons of Michael Woods (1). Michael Jr. and John Jr., are thought to be grandsons. The identity of Patrick has not be ascertained. While others may have been present, but did not signed this document, this list probably represents the main Woods HOH in the area at this time. Michael had at least two married daughters, one married to William Wallace, and one to Andrew Wallace, and both soninlaws signed the Call to the Reverend Black in 1747, indicating that they had come to Albemarle either with Michael, or sometime afterwards. It is not clear whether Sarah, Michael's third daughter was married. [2]

In addition, other families present in the area are connected by marriage to Michael. For example, son Archibald married Isabella Gass, the daughter of John Gass who died in 1734 in Pennsylvania. John's son, David apparently came with his brotherinlaw to live initially in Albemarle with his inlaws. About 1770 he traveled south to the Castle's Woods area of southwest Virginia, and later (1775) moved on to Kentucky with Daniel Boone.

Prior to moving to Albemarle this family group appears to have been living in the Paxtang area of Lancaster County, near Harrisburg. [3] Before that they are said to have come to America dis-embarking in Delaware by 1724. They may have first settled in Cecil County Maryland, as there is said to be a marriage record for daughter Hannah in that area.[4]

Footnotes

  1. NB Links are to a "most likely" person article.
  2. A Sarah Woods is known to have married a Joseph Lapsley in this time frame, but she is now believed to be the daughter of Samuel Woods of Beverley's Manor, who is sometimes identified as Michael Woods brother.
  3. Augusta court record describes Michael Woods as "formerly of Pextung" (Paxtang) as having incurred a debt with Samuel Smith in 1734. Smith operated an Inn in Connoy, PA several miles south of Paxtang, and apparently also acted as a merchant. Other family members incurred similar debts between 1734 and as late as 1739. Land records also place Michael in Paxtang as late as the spring of 1737. He took up land in Albemarle County in June of 1737. We also know that son Archibald married the daughter of John Gass, who at the time of his 1734 death was living in Cumberland County near Mechanicsburg. Archibald is listed as a witness to John's will. This area is relatively close to Paxtang, though on the west side of the Susquehannah. Thus we have several documented sources placeing the Woods family in the Cumberland Valley-Paxtang area prior to about 1737.
